Every type of engine has its optimal flight envelope (an xy-coordinate system composed of speed x/altitude y). It is not necessarily the case that turbofan engines are more fuel-efficient than turbojet engines. At supersonic speeds, turbofan engines with afterburners consume more fuel than turbojet engines.
