Top drive technology is one of several major transformations since the introduction of rotary table rigs (including hydraulic disc brakes, hydraulic drilling pumps, AC variable frequency drives, etc.). Since the top drive system (abbreviated as TDS, top drive) developed by America's Varco company was put into use in December 1981, top drives have gradually been adopted by the oil drilling industry worldwide.
