The water flow enters the runner radially and then exits the pump primarily in an axial direction. The runner's shape is similar to that of a pump and is generally suitable for water heads of 100 to 600 meters. For water heads exceeding 600 meters, two or more runners are usually connected in series to form a multi-stage setup. Japan has tested a single-stage runner for 800-meter head conditions, which is expected to enhance the applicable head range for single-stage runners. The mixed-flow water pump turbine has a simple structure and a wide range of suitable water heads, making it the most widely used model.
