Self-defense pistols typically have a range of 50 meters, a magazine capacity of 8 to 15 rounds, are single-shot, and weigh around 1 kilogram. Assault pistols, also known as combat pistols, are fully automatic and usually equipped with a detachable stock. They have a magazine capacity of 10 to 20 rounds, can be used as submachine guns, and have an effective range of 100 to 150 meters.

Modern pistols mainly include three types: revolvers, automatic pistols (in practice, semi-automatic pistols), and fully automatic pistols.
