Components used for vertical transportation between floors in a building. They facilitate transportation between floors and significant height differences. Even in multi-story and high-rise buildings where elevators and escalators serve as the primary means of vertical transportation, staircases must also be installed. In high-rise buildings, although elevators serve as the main vertical transport, staircases are retained for emergency evacuation in the event of a fire. A staircase consists of continuous flights of steps (also known as flights), landings (rest platforms), and enclosing components. The horizontal projection distance between the lowest and the highest step of a staircase is known as the staircase length, while the total height of the steps is the staircase height. As early as the Warring States period in China, staircase images were already engraved on bronze vessels. In 15th-16th century Italy, indoor staircases were liberated from traditional enclosed spaces, becoming architecturally decorative elements with varied forms.

In the 33rd chapter of “Jin Ping Mei,” it says: “Mistress Yue wanted to go upstairs but, as fate would have it, just as she reached the middle of the staircase, unexpectedly the steps were steep. Suddenly, Mistress Yue let out a cry as her foot slipped.” In the first chapter of Ba Jin’s “Destruction”: “After climbing the staircase, the young man took out a key to unlock the door to the attic room.”
