The piston internal combustion engine originated from Dutch physicist Huygens’ research on using gunpowder explosions for power. However, it was unsuccessful due to the difficulty of controlling gunpowder combustion. In 1794, British engineer Street proposed obtaining power from the combustion of fuel and, for the first time, introduced the concept of mixing fuel with air. In 1833, British engineer Wright proposed a design that directly utilized the combustion pressure to drive the piston for work.
