Bark, in a broad sense, refers to all the tissues outside the vascular cambium of the stem (old tree trunk). It serves as the protective structure on the periphery of the trunk, that is, the bark that can be stripped from the trunk during wood harvesting or processing. From inside to outside, it includes the phloem, cortex, multiple layers of accumulated periderm, and all dead tissues outside the cork layer.

All tissues outside the cambium of woody plants. These are mainly dead tissues produced by the cork cambium. Bark is usually thinner than the xylem of the stem. Bark is produced by the cambium.
