Side milling heads, also known as angle heads, are a type of machine tool accessory. When installed on a machine tool, the rotation centerline of the cutting tool can be angled relative to the rotation centerline of the spindle to machine workpieces. Originally from Europe, they are now widely used in various fields of machining, such as aerospace, automotive, and mold making. Using a milling head allows for an increased machining range and adaptability without changing the machine’s structure, enabling the completion of tasks that are difficult to achieve with traditional methods. It also reduces the need for repetitive clamping of workpieces, thereby improving machining precision and efficiency.
These heads are mainly used in machining centers and gantry milling machines. The lightweight versions can be mounted in the tool magazine and freely exchanged between the tool magazine and the machine’s spindle; the medium and heavy-duty versions have greater rigidity and torque, suitable for most machining needs.
The milling head enhances the performance of the machine tool, equivalent to adding an axis to it. In some scenarios, such as with large workpieces that are difficult to flip or when high precision is required, they can be more practical than a fourth axis.
