The subframe can be considered as the skeleton of the front and rear axles and is part of the front and rear axles. The subframe is not a complete frame; it is merely a support bracket for the front and rear axles and the suspension, allowing the axles and suspension to connect through it to the “main frame,” commonly referred to as the “subframe.” The subframe serves to isolate vibrations and noise, reducing their direct entry into the cabin. Therefore, it is mostly found in luxury cars and off-road vehicles, and some vehicles also have subframes installed for the engine.
In traditional load-bearing vehicle bodies without subframes, the suspension is directly connected to the body steel plates. Thus, the suspension control arm mechanisms for the front and rear axles are all separate parts, not assemblies. After the advent of the subframe, the front and rear suspensions can be pre-assembled onto the subframe, forming an axle assembly, which is then installed onto the vehicle body as a single unit.
